What Is Rhinoplasty?
Our Rhinoplasty in Denver is one of our commonly performed procedures and involves reshaping the nose.* Rhinoplasty surgery aims to enhance facial harmony by modifying the proportions of your nose. Sometimes known as a “nose job,” this surgical treatment can provide both aesthetic and functional benefits. Whether you’re unhappy with the size, shape, or angle of your nose, or you’re experiencing breathing issues, rhinoplasty surgery can offer a tailored solution that meets your specific needs.
What Are the Different Types of Rhinoplasty?Â
Closed Rhinoplasty
Closed rhinoplasty involves making incisions within the nostrils, thereby leaving no visible scars. This method allows us to reshape the nose by lifting the soft tissue upward. It’s often a preferred choice for patients who require less extensive modifications. Closed rhinoplasty usually involves a quicker recovery time compared to other methods.
Open Rhinoplasty
Open rhinoplasty, unlike its closed counterpart, involves an additional incision on the strip of skin between the nostrils, known as the columella. This technique provides us with better visibility and more room to work, making it ideal for more complex nose surgery procedures. The downside is that it may result in a small, albeit well-hidden, scar.
Revision Rhinoplasty
Sometimes a nose job doesn’t produce the expected results, leading to the desire for revision rhinoplasty. This is essentially a “do-over” procedure, aimed at correcting any imperfections from the initial surgery. Revision rhinoplasty can be more complicated than the original operation, given the need to work around scar tissue and changes in anatomy, but we specialize in this type of procedure.
Why Is Rhinoplasty Performed?
Rhinoplasty is performed to:
- Enhance the proportions of the nose to other facial features (known as a nose augmentation)*
- Improve nasal width at the bridge and the position of the nostrils*
- Amend visible bumps on the nasal bridge*
- Adjust the tip of the nose*
- Improve nasal symmetry*
- Enhance breathing capabilities*
During your consultation appointment, we will discuss with you what your goals for this procedure are and give you a chance to ask your plastic surgeon questions.
Rhinoplasty Before and After
Rhinoplasty and Digital Imaging Software
Digital imaging software has become a valuable tool in the realm of nasal surgery, including rhinoplasty. This technology allows us to create virtual models of your nose, offering a preview of potential surgical outcomes. It aids in setting realistic expectations and fine-tuning surgical plans, enhancing communication and precision. During your consultation, we’ll introduce you to this efficient tool to better align your goals with surgical possibilities.
About the Rhinoplasty Consultation
Pre-operative planning is important for a successful rhinoplasty. During your initial consultation, Dr. Murphy thoroughly discusses your goals, reviews your medical history, and conducts a physical examination to tailor a precise surgical plan. Unlike many practices, Dr. Murphy personally uses digital imaging software during follow-up visits to clarify surgical outcomes and limitations. The final “pre-op appointment” includes aftercare instructions, prescriptions, and “before” photos to aid in the procedure for a comprehensive and hands-on approach.

About the Rhinoplasty Procedure
Preparation
When you arrive at our facility, you’ll go through a brief check-in process. Afterward, we’ll prepare you for surgery, which includes administering anesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
Procedure
Once you’re ready, incisions will be made, either within the nostrils for a closed approach or an additional one on the columella for an open approach. Through these incisions, we’ll work on reshaping or augmenting the internal structures of your nose. This could mean removing cartilage, refining the nasal tip, or even adding grafts for nose augmentation.
Closing Up
After making the desired changes, the incisions are closed with sutures. Depending on the complexity of the nose reshaping, the entire process can take anywhere from one to three hours.
About Rhinoplasty Recovery
The First Week
Expect some level of discomfort and facial puffiness, which is quite normal. Pain medication will be prescribed to manage any discomfort you may feel. You’ll also be advised to keep your head elevated, even during sleep, to minimize swelling.
Weeks 2-4
During this period, you’ll likely notice a gradual reduction in swelling and bruising around the nasal area. It’s important to avoid strenuous activities and exercise during this time to help with healing.
Beyond One Month
Most patients are able to resume their normal activities after about four to six weeks. However, it’s essential to continue following any guidelines we provide for optimal healing.
Final Results
While you may see noticeable improvements within a few weeks, it can take up to a year for your new nasal contour to fully settle. Periodic check-ins can be arranged to assess your progress. Recovery experiences can vary from patient to patient. We’ll be with you every step of the way, ready to address any concerns or questions you may have throughout your healing phase.
Frequently Asked Questions About Rhinoplasty
What Results Can I Expect From a Rhinoplasty?
When you choose a rhinoplasty specialist like Dr. Murphy, you can generally expect improvements in both the form and function of your nose. This can include enhanced facial symmetry, corrected structural issues, and better breathing capabilities. Keep in mind that the end goal of nasal surgery is to achieve a natural-looking result that harmonizes with your other facial features, while also potentially resolving any breathing issues.
Will I Have Scars After My Rhinoplasty?
The presence of scars largely depends on the type of nose surgery performed. If you are concerned about scarring, you can discuss with us whether a closed rhinoplasty is a viable option for your situation. Even in open rhinoplasty, incisions are placed discreetly so that they are not noticeable. These well-hidden scars also fade over time, becoming even less noticeable.
When Will I See My Final Results?
Patience is key when it comes to nose reshaping. While you’ll likely notice some changes shortly after the procedure, final results can take several months. It takes time for all swelling to subside, bruises to fade, and everything to adjust to the new shape and get settled in.
Will My Rhinoplasty Results Be Permanent?
Most of your results following a rhinoplasty are permanent. However, it is natural for some minor changes to occur to your facial profile — including the nose — as your body ages. Results will vary from person to person.*
What Is the Recovery Process Like for Rhinoplasty?
Following your rhinoplasty procedure, protective bandages will be placed around the nose for support during the healing process. It will take time for your reshaped nasal contour to properly refine. Some patients may experience periodic swelling. Our team will provide you with aftercare instructions on how to tend to the operated area. A follow-up appointment will be scheduled for us to monitor your recovery process.*

Rhinoplasty may be a suitable procedure for you if:
