Is Male Breast Reduction Right for You?

What is a Male Breast Reduction?

Gynecomastia is a condition that causes men to have enlarged breasts. The condition can surface at any age, and it is usually caused by certain medications, heredity, and hormonal changes. Although diet and exercise can help reduce enlarged breasts in males, the glandular tissue may still remain, so even fit men can show signs of gynecomastia. Many men with gynecomastia choose to correct the condition with a male breast reduction. The procedure removes excess glandular tissue and fat for a firm and masculine chest.

Gynecomastia surgery is usually combined with liposuction to remove fat and excess glandular tissue. For liposuction, the surgeon creates an opening into which a small cannula is inserted to remove excess glandular tissue and fat. If you have liposuction administered to treat gynecomastia, you may be given a compression garment to minimize swelling and aid healing. Many men are able to return to work a number of days after the surgery, but you should refrain from strenuous activities for a matter of weeks. For those whose gynecomastia mostly consists of fat, CoolSculpting may be the more preferable option; CoolSculpting is entirely non-invasive and requires no downtime whatsoever.

Who are the Best Candidates for the Procedure?

The procedure can be administered on adult men and teens, but teens may need an additional surgery if the condition develops into adulthood. The following factors can determine if you are an ideal candidate for the procedure:

  • You are unhappy with the appearance of your chest;
  • You have excess skin and breast tissue;
  • You have tried other treatments that didn’t work.

It is also important that you are at a stable weight. If you have weight fluctuations, it can cause the condition to reoccur. You should also be in good health with a positive outlook about the results of the procedure.
